Plot Outline: A young American and his English wife come to rural England and face increasingly vicious local harassment.
Plot: Dustin Hoffman plays a regular American mathematician, who gets into some trouble with local bullies. He is made fun of and then his wife is raped. When they attack his home, he fights back. His outbreak of violence is extreme.

Crazy Credits: We know about 3 Crazy Credits. One of them reads:
At the end of the movie there is a teaser-trailer for a (never to be released) History of the World: Part II, featuring a Viking burial, a "Hitler on Ice" number and a science fiction "Jews in Space".

Goofs: We know about 2 goofs. Here comes one of them:
Crew or equipment visible: As David and Amy Sumner drive up to their house for the first time, the camera crew is reflected in the cars side window.

Trivia: There are 16 entries in the trivia list - like these:
    • Among the actors initially considered for the role of David Sumner were Donald Sutherland, Jack Nicholson and Sidney Poitier. Actresses originally considered and/or auditioned for the role of Amy were Diana Rigg, Charlotte Rampling and Helen Mirren.
    • The title comes from the Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu, who wrote, "Heaven and earth are not humane, and regard the people as straw dogs."
    • In order to express a sick enjoyment in the scene where Dustin Hoffman beats the man on the floor to death, he requested that there would be coconuts there for him to smash. In one shot you can actually see a bit of coconut flying off, which Sam Peckinpah passed off as brain matter.
